LOS ANGELES, CA — A man apparently jumped to his death Sunday night in the international terminal at Los Angeles International Airport, stunning travelers and snarling traffic during the busy holiday travel season.

The 27-year-old man, identified as an LAX worker, apparently jumped at 8:15 p.m. from the upper level of Tom Bradley Terminal, landing 100 feet below on the lower level, said Los Angeles Airport police Sgt. Rob Pedregon and Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart. His death was being investigated as a suicide, authorities said.

“It appears the man was on an upper level when he jumped,” Pedregon said. “He landed on the Customs level, which is one level below. He was dead at the scene.”

“Unfortunately, he was beyond medical help, and paramedics determined him dead on the scene,” Stewart wrote in a fire department statement.

The man’s name was being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

There was no information immediately available regarding why the man may have jumped.
